"We liked everything about Tutor Doctor Cambridge. They put in an immense amount of effort to find exactly the right tutor for our son. Nothing was too much trouble over the period of working with them to help our child get the best out of home tutoring. The tutor they found was great and we couldn't be happier with the service we received.”
Onur, Cambridge

Unlock the Power of Online Tutoring!
Tutor Doctor Cambridge is proud to be an approved Tuition Partner as part of the National Tutoring Programme. Since 2010, Tutor Doctor in Cambridge, and more recently in Norwich, has been providing a professional tutoring service to private families and directly with schools, Virtual Schools and County Council students. Our one-to-one and small group tuition re-engages students in learning, builds confidence and achieves academic success.
The National Tutoring Programme (NTP) is a government-funded programme that provides schools access to high-quality tutoring, at a heavily subsidised rate, to support students whose education has been affected by school closures from the pandemic. Unlock the Power of Online Tutoring
Given the current situation with school closures and social distancing, we are increasingly switching all our tutoring from in person to on-line. The tutors we work with at Tutor Doctor Cambridge have all been set up to tutor on-line via a dedicated tutoring web-platform called Bramble. The Bramble software is easy to use and allows your student to talk, sketch and share resources with their online tutor in real-time, whilst maintaining appropriate social distancing.
Online tutoring makes life really simple by bringing tutors and students together at any time. The success of on-line tutoring is about having the right tutor and leveraging the technology. We're very happy to discuss other on-line solutions and platforms as preferred and will be flexible to make this work for you when we all get used to a new way of working and living in 2020.
Online tutoring has enabled our local Cambridge tutors to continue to work with their existing families and schools during these difficult times. We are working with new families every day in this way who are approaching us for the service we have always provided in matching the right tutor with their student, but this time tutoring on-line.

When you want to give your child customised tutoring services that meet their educational needs and learning style, turn to Tutor Doctor Cambridge. One of the most important dimensions to a tutoring company, is of course, the tutors we work with. We pride ourselves on carefully selecting tutors who we believe will bring out the best in our students. We work with over 200 expert tutors in Cambridge who we have screened and then interviewed face-to-face. We receive formal references for each tutor too and ensure they have an up to date DBS check.
The other key difference is the matching process. The first stage of any programme is to meet the student and their parents for a free consultation to get a good understanding of where we’re at and where we’d like to be. Everybody’s different and by getting to know the student we can look to line up the right kind of tutor, for them.
“Excellent bespoke pairing of the tutor to suit the child’s personality and needs. A superb weekly report by our tutor and real confidence in what is being taught.”
Laura, Hemingford Grey
Through the Tutor Doctor Process we are able to get to know your student to identify the right learning strategy and the perfect tutor.
Through our free consultation process, we take a comprehensive and collaborative approach to create a programme that is right for your child.
The local office team review the report from the consultation and start the process of making the match with a member of the Cambridge tutoring team. The match will be based on a number of factors, including experience and personality as well as someone who can meet the timeslots and location that works for you.
Our personalised coaching means the curriculum revolves around your child. We provide homework help and fill in the gaps to create confident, independent learners.
We support your family every step of the way. A member of our Cambridge office team will check in regularly on progress and you will be provided with weekly session reports.
“Excellent organisation and communication. I like that I am dealing with a professional company that offer guarantees and have a large number of tutors to choose from. Plus the Tutor we have is very good too!”
Emma, Stapleford
In 2010, Rob and Lynne left successful careers in Marketing and HR respectively, and decided it was time to build a business together. They have always considered themselves to be a strong team and wanted to create a business they would be proud of. With their kids off to school and 40th birthdays on the horizon, they decided it was time to make their plans a reality.
Rob and Lynne went on the hunt for inspiration in order to start their scary journey away from corporate life. Just as they were researching various routes, a Canadian based business called Tutor Doctor was presented to them; it appealed to them on so many levels. The biggest attraction was that it was about helping people (and especially children) learn and helping them fulfil their potential. Rob and Lynne felt this business idea was perfect for them, perfect for their values and perfect for Cambridge.
Many years on and it’s proved to be just that!

We tutor more Maths than any other subject here in Cambridge. One-to-one tutoring really lends itself to learning Maths, with a specialist and carefully selected tutor able to go back to the foundations, or what we call “building blocks”, so that the current Maths being worked on becomes more easily understood. For Maths tutoring we often talk about Method and Care. Maths is about being secure on the method, but then taking care to not lose your way or to lose marks unnecessarily come exam time. We provide tutoring services for a wide range of Maths students, from Primary through to GCSE and A-Level and adult learners too.
A lot of what we do helps us get students ready for the big day, for the exam that often has been preying on their minds. Every situation is different, so by getting to know the students we can set up a plan that aids progress in their grasp of three areas: content, study skills and exam technique. Exams are a stressful point in any student’s academic career, but we aim to leave the student feeling that they absolutely gave it their best shot and left nothing behind.
We obviously do lots of preparation for GCSE’s and A-Levels, but we’re also busy with entrance exams for the Cambridge schools such as The Perse, The Stephen Perse Foundation and The Leys. As with all exam preparation support we do, there isn’t a magic formula, but we strive to help the student cover the necessary content so there’s no surprises on the day and that they have a plan on what they’re going to do and how they’re going to do it.
The tutors we work with bring comprehensive knowledge and insight into the exams for which they tutor. We connect you with personally matched tutors based on a wide range of factors which we’ll discuss with the student at the consultation. Our experienced tutors will provide individualised instruction, instant feedback, detailed session reports and they have the accountability to help ensure your student can achieve their personal best.
In Science courses, students need to process large amounts of information and retain it. Additionally, sometimes the areas studied each year are without any overlap in knowledge. Consequently, Tutor Doctor is able to assist you or your student in every area of the curriculum and help face each new challenge. The tutors we work with have the skills and experience to help students quickly improve their grades and confidence in Science. We work with students working towards GCSE and A-Levels, and younger students too. The disciplines the tutors we work with cover include:
Maths, English, Science and Languages make up probably 80% of what we do but, especially for A-Level, we open up to other popular subjects including History, Geography, RE, Business Studies, Economics, Politics and Social Sciences: Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy. The work the tutors do will focus on content first but also exam/essay skills. Just writing down everything you know about a topic area will really only get you so far and often a disappointingly low grade. The tutor will help coach and guide against the marking scheme set by the relevant Examination Boards, providing skills and tools to help the student maximise their return from the knowledge they have.
Tutor Doctor understands that not all students learn these subjects in the same way – we use our consultation to get a good grasp of how the student likes to learn and where their particular concerns are so that we can match the right tutor for them. Our method of individually matching each student with a tutor ensures compatibility between student and “instructor”, allowing for a more productive, natural, and customised education. The result is a more enjoyable learning experience (and teaching experience) and higher marks.
Tutor Doctor can help students of all ages and levels improve their use of our language, and when it comes to it, their marks for GCSE’s and A-Levels, and for the younger students for their SATs and 11+/13+ Entrance Exams. Whether the student’s struggling with reading, comprehension, or any other aspect of the curriculum, the tutors we work with can help to sharpen their skills, and also give them some belief and confidence back. Yes, there’s often exams to be taken, but using words well helps us all be better communicators, giving an advantage throughout one's life. The areas we can help you or your student include:
We know all students can succeed given the right tools and personalised one-to-one attention, which is exactly what our tutoring programmes aim to provide. Genuinely, every student is different and some students we work with have specific educational needs that have been diagnosed and require a certain approach with regards to how they go about their learning. We will work together to create the right educational framework to help your child succeed. We will be very clear with prospective tutors we approach for all students, but especially those with SEND, what the situation is and give them the necessary detail so that they can confidently step forward to work with the student based on their skills and experience. Just give us a call to discuss your situation so that we can advise if we can help, but here's a shortlist of some of the categories of SEND students we work with:
Learning a foreign language is becoming more and more important in an increasingly integrated community. From helping to open doors for job opportunities to broadening horizons, learning to communicate in another language can help stretch mental capabilities. Language is such a key aspect to setting your student up for success in their future professional endeavours.
We will pair students to a personally matched tutor, making learning a new language more enjoyable. Whether you are an adult needing assistance with a language or have a child struggling through a language class for GCSE or A-Level, the tutors we work with can fit into your schedule. The main languages we tutor are as follow, but do ask us as we can, more often than not, find a solution for people who approach us for help in something more unusual:
Tutor Doctor's online learning tools provide an exceptional experience for students who need a specialist tutor who may not be available locally. Also, online tutoring allows our local tutors to continue working with your child when circumstances interfere with the usual run of things: cars breaking down, trips abroad, a broken leg! Our online tools are purposefully built for tutoring. They’re easy to use and allow your student to talk, sketch and share resources with their online tutor in real-time. We use a specialist learning platform which records every session. This means that the student can play back the session in their own time and each session is also indexed so that you and the tutor can search for the topic and it will tell you exactly where to find it. Online Tutoring makes life really simple by bringing tutors and students together at any time. When you aren't limited to being matched with tutors available in your area, we are able to find you or your student the best possible match! Some of the advantages of online tutoring are:
Rob and Lynne Kerrison, owners of Cambridge-based tutoring business, Tutor Doctor, are celebrating a huge success after being crowned the winners of a national tutoring award. The husband-and-wife led company has been honoured by a distinguished panel of judges with the National Tutoring Award 2023 for ‘Best Tuition Delivery to Schools’, presented at this year’s glitzy award ceremony in London on 30th June.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to have been given such a prestigious award,” said Rob. “It’s been an amazing 13 years so far, and it’s incredibly satisfying to know that our collaborative efforts with schools in and around Cambridge are being recognised. Offering a professional tutoring solution for schools and councils is something we're passionate about, enabling us to make a real positive impact on students, particularly those who are disadvantaged or may need extra support, so this is a very proud moment for us. To see Tutor Doctor Cambridge be acknowledged for the work we do in schools across Cambridgeshire and further afield as part of our work on the Department of Education’s National Tutoring Programme is just an unbelievable feeling.”
Tutor Doctor Cambridge provides in-home, in-school and online one-to-one, and small group tutoring, helping students across the region to achieve their potential. Rob and Lynne’s sole aim is to change the trajectory of children’s lives for the better, giving them the support and personalised tutoring they need to set them up for success. This academic year alone, the business has delivered tutoring programmes to over 30 school partners and local authorities. With a team of 200 highly qualified tutors, Tutor Doctor Cambridge administers around 20,000 hours of tutoring each year, of which about 65% is to schools and local authority clients, working with significantly disadvantaged students who are often struggling with mental health issues and those unable to access mainstream schooling.
“Our efforts over the last 13 years have led to us becoming the tutoring provider of choice across Cambridge, so we couldn’t be more delighted to be recognised with such an incredible accolade,” added Lynne. “It goes without saying that without our amazing team this would never have been possible; our dedicated support team and our amazingly hard-working tutors have enabled us to grow the business and to consistently deliver the exceptional service that our clients and students expect from us. Rob and I set out to inspire students and to make a real difference to their lives, so it feels incredible that The Tutors’ Association and their panel of judges have recognised that too.”
The second annual National Tutoring Awards, organised by The Tutors’ Association, showcases the quality and diversity of professional tutors and tuition businesses. They identify individuals and organisations that can demonstrate how they have made a transformative difference to students’ academic careers and life chances and work tirelessly to support students across the UK and internationally.
“Tutor Doctor Cambridge demonstrated an extraordinary dedication towards delivering quality tuition at scale, in line with their four watchwords of being "local, friendly, professional and flexible”, said John Nichols, President of The Tutors’ Association. “Their approach to delivering tuition in partnership with schools impressed the judges by being both thoroughly well-organised and structured whilst also offering a high degree of adaptability to each school and student's needs, which was borne out by the comments made by the referees. Their model of continuous improvement, innovation and communication clearly showed how school leaders were well supported in putting in place highly impactful tuition programmes.”
